Choose between a dedicated kanji sequence and a wider mix of kana, vocabulary, phrases and kanji.

## Short answer

Compare WaniKani's prepared kanji sequence with Inku's kana, vocabulary, phrases and kanji. Choose by the material you need next and the reviews you can manage.

Keep WaniKani if you want a dedicated sequence built around kanji and related vocabulary. Consider Inku if your next task is kana, a vocabulary topic or a phrase pack alongside kanji. Both schedule reviews, but they organize the material differently. A wider mix does not replace grammar lessons, conversation or reading practice.

## Why you are probably searching this

The usual path to looking for a WaniKani alternative goes through at least one of these:

- You need kana practice alongside kanji rather than another dedicated kanji sequence

- You want to choose a JLPT vocabulary level, everyday topic or phrase pack

- You want to compare the next study task and review workload before adding another app

## What a good alternative looks like

First name the gap. If you need a prepared kanji order, WaniKani already serves that job. If you need kana or vocabulary outside that order, compare the actual material in a broader app. Neither option supplies a complete Japanese course on its own.

## How Inku is different

- Hiragana and katakana with audio, vocabulary decks for every JLPT level from N5 to N1, everyday topic decks such as food, travel and shopping, three phrase packs (casual, polite and travel), and a kanji course with 960 kanji from N5 to N1.

- Each lesson introduces five items with the reading, meaning and pronunciation audio, then asks you to recall them. FSRS schedules every item for review, and you answer Again, Got it or Too easy.

- WaniKani uses radicals, its component shapes, and mnemonics, or memory stories, to introduce kanji and related vocabulary in a prepared sequence. Its owner describes about 2,000 kanji and 6,000 vocabulary words. Inku's smaller kanji course does not use the same radical curriculum.

- WaniKani's first three levels are free. Use them to inspect its order and review style; paying for later levels does not let you skip the sequence. Compare that choice with Inku's public material before taking on another review queue.

- Inku does not teach grammar or practise speaking. Keep suitable sentence, listening and conversation work in your study plan.

- Inku is a paid app. Studying needs an Inku Pro subscription, bought through the App Store on iPhone or through checkout on the web, and you can try an introductory lesson in your browser first.

## Common questions

### Does Inku replace WaniKani?

Choose by the job. WaniKani is the larger dedicated kanji course; Inku combines 960 kanji with kana, vocabulary and phrases. A smaller kanji inventory is a real tradeoff. Neither app replaces a complete course or conversation practice.

### Should I use Inku and WaniKani together?

Use both only when each has a distinct job you need. For example, you could keep kanji in WaniKani and choose kana or phrases in Inku. Check the material and your existing reviews first; adding another app does not by itself solve a study gap.
