Japanese Pitch Accent: Why Most Apps Skip It and Whether You Should Care
Pitch accent is Japanese's invisible grammar. Here is when to study it, when to ignore it, and how to hear it for the first time.
What pitch accent actually is
Every syllable in Japanese is either high (H) or low (L) in pitch relative to the syllables around it. This pattern is not random. Each word in standard Tokyo Japanese has a specific pitch pattern, and that pattern is part of the word the same way vowel sounds are part of the word. Getting it wrong does not always cause misunderstanding, but it marks you as a non-native speaker instantly, and in a small number of cases it changes the meaning entirely.
Pitch accent is not tonal in the Chinese sense. Mandarin assigns a tone to each syllable independently. Japanese assigns a pitch pattern to the whole word, and the pattern follows predictable rules based on word type and position. Words are classified by where their pitch drops from high to low. An accentless word stays flat. A word with a drop on the first syllable sounds different from the same sounds with a drop on the third syllable.
Think of it as a melody attached to each word rather than a tone attached to each note. The melody may feel subtle to English-speaking ears at first. After a few weeks of deliberate listening, it stops being subtle. You will start to hear it in every sentence.
Minimal pairs that matter
A minimal pair is two words that are spelled and pronounced identically except for pitch pattern, and which have completely different meanings. Here are the most commonly cited examples in standard Tokyo Japanese:
- 橋 (hashi, bridge) - LH pattern (low first syllable, high second) vs. 箸 (hashi, chopsticks) - HL pattern (high first, low second)
- 雨 (ame, rain) - LH vs. 飴 (ame, candy) - HL
- 柿 (kaki, persimmon) - LH vs. 牡蠣 (kaki, oyster) - HL
- 聞く (kiku, to listen) - LHH vs. 菊 (kiku, chrysanthemum) - LHL
- 神 (kami, god) - LH vs. 紙 (kami, paper) - HL vs. 髪 (kami, hair) - HL
Before you panic: most of these minimal pairs are disambiguated by context. You will rarely be in a situation where “rain” and “candy” are plausibly confused. The chopstick-bridge distinction comes up more often at meals. The hair-paper-god set requires real context dependence. These examples are useful for training your ear, not proof that Japanese conversation is a constant minefield.

Why apps skip it
Pitch accent is invisible in standard Japanese text. Kanji and kana carry no pitch information. Pitch is stored only in dictionaries (specifically in the pitch accent annotation some dictionaries include), in the speaker's knowledge, or in audio. Representing it visually requires a system that most learners are not familiar with and which disrupts the clean look of a flashcard.
There is also a practical argument: pitch errors at the beginner level do not prevent communication. Japanese speakers are accustomed to foreign learners with flat or inconsistent pitch. They understand you. The cost-benefit calculation for most apps is: time spent teaching pitch could be spent on vocabulary or grammar, both of which have a higher immediate payoff for comprehension.
The counterargument, which the serious learner community tends to make loudly, is that habits built without pitch awareness become hard to break. If you spend two years saying ame with the wrong pitch every time, that wrong pitch is deep in your motor memory. Relearning it requires dedicated unlearning, which is harder than learning correctly the first time.
Both arguments are right. The resolution is: introduce pitch awareness early (so you hear the patterns), defer active drilling until you have vocabulary to practice on.
When beginners should start
My recommendation: start paying attention to pitch accent when you hit N4, not before. Here is the reasoning. Pitch accent study requires enough vocabulary to be meaningful. You are learning the pitch of words, and if you know 300 words, you have 300 words to potentially re-examine. At N4, you are closer to 1,500. That gives you enough material to develop genuine pitch intuition rather than memorizing a handful of examples.
Before N4: listen to a lot of native audio. Shadow it. Your ear will absorb pitch patterns passively even before you know consciously what they are. When you shadow, copy the rhythm and melody of the speaker as closely as you can. You are building auditory and motor patterns that will make explicit pitch study more effective later.
At N4: start looking up pitch patterns in OJAD for words you are actively learning. Add pitch notation to your flashcards (a simple H/L marking above or below the reading). Begin shadowing audio specifically chosen for pitch modeling. Consider Dogen's course if you want systematic coverage.
One important note: if you have a specific context where pitch matters, like preparing for an acting role, voice work, professional business Japanese, or working in a field where accent marks expertise, start earlier. Otherwise, N4 is soon enough.
How to practice pitch accent
The core practice method is shadowing. Listen to a sentence spoken by a native speaker, then immediately repeat it at the same speed, matching pitch as closely as possible. Record yourself. Compare. The recording step is uncomfortable and essential. Your internal sense of how you sound is not reliable. The recording tells the truth.

Tokyo vs. Osaka: the regional problem
Standard Japanese as taught in apps, textbooks, and JLPT materials uses Tokyo pitch accent. This is hyojungo, the standard dialect. If you are learning Japanese from media, textbooks, or for business contexts, Tokyo pitch is what you want.
The Kansai region (Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe) has a fundamentally different pitch system. Some words that are HL in Tokyo are LH in Osaka. It is not just an accent; it is a different rule set. A learner who moves to Osaka after studying Tokyo pitch will find their ear working against them for a few months, and vice versa.
For most learners: study Tokyo pitch, period. If you know you are moving to Kansai or have a specific reason to study Kansai dialect (you love Kansai comedy, you have family there, you are deeply interested in regional dialects), acknowledge the difference and choose deliberately. Do not try to study both simultaneously. The overlap causes more confusion than clarity.
Pitch accent is real, it matters at higher levels, and it is one of the most interesting phonological systems in any major language. Approach it with curiosity, defer the heavy study until your vocabulary is large enough to make it meaningful, and above all: keep listening. Months of good input solve problems that weeks of explicit drilling cannot.
Common questions
Do beginners really need to study pitch accent?+
No, not at first. Japanese people understand foreign speakers with pitch errors all the time. What you need is intelligible pronunciation, not native-accurate pitch.
