How Inku works

A simple guide to learning Japanese with Inku.

Updated November 5, 2026

Start with a lesson

Inku helps you learn Japanese with ready-made flashcards. Start with a short lesson in your browser or on iPhone. You can try the first lesson before you create an account.

During a lesson, look at each card, listen to its audio, and learn its meaning or reading. Then try to recall what you learned.

Come back for reviews

After a lesson, Inku schedules the cards for review. When cards are due, open Review and try to remember the answer before you reveal it.

Choose Again when you need more practice and Got it when you remember. Inku uses your answers and review history to decide when to show a card again. If you already know a card, you can choose Too easy.

Choose what to learn

Study hiragana, katakana, vocabulary, phrases, and kanji. You can choose material by JLPT level or by topics that interest you. Lessons introduce new material; reviews help you remember it.

Make it yours

Save useful words to your Library, organize them into your own decks, or create a card for a word or phrase you want to remember. Your personal cards can join your reviews too.

Save your progress

Create an Inku account to continue studying and save your progress. Connect to the internet to sync your progress.

After the introductory lesson, studying in the app requires Inku Pro. Your checkout shows the available plans and any trial before you subscribe.

Keep going at your pace

Return to your due reviews and start a new lesson when you are ready. Pair your flashcards with reading, listening, and other Japanese practice that you enjoy.
