How to study with Japanese flashcards
Flashcards work because of active recall — pulling an answer out of memory instead of recognizing it in a list. The struggle to remember is exactly what builds the memory. A simple, effective routine:
- Start with one deck. Learn all of hiragana before adding katakana, then move to N5 vocabulary.
- Say it out loud.Use "Hear it," repeat the sound, then check the reading. Linking sound to shape locks it in.
- Be honest with grading. If you hesitated, press Again. Easy passes you did not earn just hide the gaps.
- Review daily. Five short sessions across a week beat one long cram. That spacing is the whole point.
Why spaced repetition matters
Re-queuing missed cards within a session is a light form of spaced repetition. The stronger version schedules each card across days and weeks, timed to the moment you are about to forget it. That is what the FSRS algorithm does, and why a dedicated app remembers your schedule when a web page cannot. For the full method, see spaced repetition explained.
