Two kinds of adjective
い-adjectives end in い in their dictionary form: たかい (expensive), おいしい (tasty), あつい (hot).
な-adjectives take な before a noun: しずかなへや (shizuka na heya), a quiet room.
Watch out: きれい (pretty), ゆうめい (famous) and きらい (disliked) end in い but are な-adjectives.
い-adjective forms
Present: たかい. Negative: たかくない. Past: たかかった. Past negative: たかくなかった.
Add です to any of these to make them polite: たかいです, たかくないです, たかかったです, たかくなかったです.
たかくありません is a more formal polite negative. In speech, たかくないです is more common.
The irregular いい
いい (good) uses よ for every other form: よくない (not good), よかった (was good), よくなかった (wasn't good).
いくない and いかった are wrong.
な-adjective forms
Present: しずかだ / しずかです. Negative: しずかじゃない / しずかじゃないです (or しずかじゃありません).
Past: しずかだった / しずかでした. Past negative: しずかじゃなかった / しずかじゃなかったです.
The adjective itself never changes; only だ or です does, exactly as with nouns.
Joining two adjectives
い-adjectives use くて: このみせはやすくておいしいです。(Kono mise wa yasukute oishii desu.) This shop is cheap and good.
な-adjectives use で: しずかできれいなまちです。(Shizuka de kirei na machi desu.) It's a quiet, pretty town.
Common mistakes
たかいでした ✗ → たかかったです ✓. The past goes on the adjective, not on です.
きれくない ✗ → きれいじゃない ✓. きれい is a な-adjective.

Common questions
Is たかくありません wrong?+
No. It is a more formal polite negative. たかくないです is more common in conversation.
How do I turn an adjective into an adverb?+
い → く: はやい → はやく (quickly). な → に: しずか → しずかに (quietly).
Why is きれい a な-adjective?+
Its final い is part of the word, not an ending. Learn きれい, ゆうめい and きらい as な-adjectives from the start.
Do な-adjectives always use な?+
Only before a noun: しずかなへや. At the end of a sentence, use です or だ: へやはしずかです.
