Japanese Counters: Why You Cannot Just Count to Ten

Japanese uses different counters for flat things, long things, people, and animals. Here are the ones worth learning first and how to drill them.

Why counters exist

In English you count everything with the same bare number. One book, two chairs, three dogs. The number sits next to the noun and that is the end of it. Japanese does not work that way. Numbers in Japanese attach a suffix called a counter, and the counter you use depends on the shape, category, or nature of whatever you are counting.

This is not a quirk or an accident. Many languages across East and Southeast Asia use similar classifier systems. The logic is that number alone does not fully describe a quantity. Saying one of something tells you very little about what kind of thing it is. The counter carries that information. When you hear ichi-mai you know immediately the thing is flat and thin - a sheet of paper, a plate, a slice of bread. When you hear ip-pon you know the thing is long and cylindrical - a pen, a bottle, a chopstick.

For a beginner this feels like an extra layer of difficulty on top of an already demanding language. That reaction is fair. But counters are also learnable in a reasonable way. The number of counters that actually matter for everyday communication is much smaller than it appears, and there is a built-in fallback system that works while you are building up your knowledge.

The tsu safety net

Japanese has a native counting system that works for small general objects when you do not know or cannot recall the specific counter. It goes like this:

  • hitotsu (ひとつ) - one
  • futatsu (ふたつ) - two
  • mittsu (みっつ) - three
  • yottsu (よっつ) - four
  • itsutsu (いつつ) - five
  • muttsu (むっつ) - six
  • nanatsu (ななつ) - seven
  • yattsu (やっつ) - eight
  • kokonotsu (ここのつ) - nine
  • too (とお) - ten

This system stops at ten and does not extend further, so it will not help you count twelve apples or twenty-five stamps. It also does not work for people, animals, or things with their own firmly established counters. But for ordering three dumplings or asking for two of something at a shop, hitotsu and futatsu will get you understood without hesitation.

Think of the tsu system as training wheels. Use it freely while you learn the specific counters. Native speakers use it too when they are in a hurry or unsure. Nobody will look at you strangely for reaching for it.

Eight counters to learn first

Rather than memorizing an exhaustive list, focus on the counters that appear in real conversation and in early study material. These eight cover the situations you will encounter most often before intermediate level.

Nin (にん) - people

  • hitori (ひとり) - one person (irregular)
  • futari (ふたり) - two people (irregular)
  • san-nin (さんにん) - three people
  • yo-nin (よにん) - four people
  • go-nin (ごにん) - five people

The first two are irregulars that come from old native Japanese words. From three onward the counter follows a regular pattern. Hitori and futari come up constantly - in restaurants, in conversation, on forms asking group size - so memorize them early as fixed phrases rather than trying to derive them from a rule.

Mai (まい) - flat thin things

  • ichi-mai (いちまい) - one sheet, one slice, one plate
  • ni-mai (にまい) - two sheets
  • san-mai (さんまい) - three sheets

Mai covers paper, tickets, stamps, plates, slices of bread, coins, and any other flat thin object. It is one of the most stable counters in terms of sound changes - the number just attaches without phonetic shifts, which makes it a comfortable one to practice early.

Hon (ほん) - long cylindrical things

  • ip-pon (いっぽん) - one long thing
  • ni-hon (にほん) - two
  • san-bon (さんぼん) - three
  • yon-hon (よんほん) - four
  • go-hon (ごほん) - five

Hon applies to pens, pencils, chopsticks, bottles, trees, rivers, roads, and other elongated things. It is famous for its sound changes, which are covered in detail in the next section. The concept of what counts as long enough is looser than you might expect. A banana is hon. A glass of water (cylindrical container) is often hon too.

Ko (こ) - small general objects

  • ik-ko (いっこ) - one small object
  • ni-ko (にこ) - two
  • san-ko (さんこ) - three

Ko is a versatile counter for compact objects: apples, eggs, erasers, batteries, candies. It overlaps with the tsu system in practice. When you are not sure whether to use ko or tsu for a small object, either one will communicate your meaning.

Hiki (ひき) - animals

  • ip-piki (いっぴき) - one animal
  • ni-hiki (にひき) - two
  • san-biki (さんびき) - three
  • yon-hiki (よんひき) - four

Hiki covers small to medium animals: dogs, cats, fish, insects. Larger animals like horses and cows take a different counter (tou), and birds take another (wa). For everyday pet-related conversation and early JLPT material, hiki is the one to know. It also has pronounced sound changes that mirror the hon pattern.

Dai (だい) - machines and vehicles

  • ichi-dai (いちだい) - one machine or vehicle
  • ni-dai (にだい) - two
  • san-dai (さんだい) - three

Dai counts cars, bicycles, computers, televisions, printers, and other machines. It is phonetically stable - no irregular sound shifts - which makes it straightforward to drill.

Kai (かい) - times or occurrences

  • ik-kai (いっかい) - one time, once
  • ni-kai (にかい) - two times, twice
  • san-kai (さんかい) - three times

Kai counts repetitions and occurrences: how many times something happened, how many sets in a workout, how many rounds in a game. It is also the counter for floors in a building, which gives you two uses for the price of one. Note that the first floor is ik-kai with a doubled k sound, just as the first occurrence is.

Tsu (つ) - the native fallback

Listed here again as a reminder that the native counting system described earlier counts as its own counter. When in doubt, use it. It is not a sign of ignorance. It is a feature of the language.

Sound changes that trip people up

Japanese counters do not always attach cleanly to numbers. When certain number-counter combinations sit next to each other, the sounds shift to make pronunciation smoother. These are phonetic assimilation rules, sometimes called sequential voicing and sound change. They look arbitrary at first but follow consistent patterns once you see them side by side.

The hon counter shows the most visible set of shifts:

  • 1: ichi + hon becomes ip-pon (いっぽん) - h shifts to p, ichi shortens
  • 2: ni-hon (にほん) - no change
  • 3: san + hon becomes san-bon (さんぼん) - h shifts to b
  • 4: yon-hon (よんほん) - no change
  • 5: go-hon (ごほん) - no change
  • 6: roku + hon becomes rop-pon (ろっぽん) - h shifts to p, roku shortens
  • 7: nana-hon (ななほん) - no change
  • 8: hachi + hon becomes hap-pon (はっぽん) - h shifts to p, hachi shortens
  • 9: kyuu-hon (きゅうほん) - no change
  • 10: juu + hon becomes jup-pon (じゅっぽん) - h shifts to p

The rule is not random. Numbers 1, 6, 8, and 10 cause the shift because they end in a stop sound. The h in hon assimilates to match and becomes p (unvoiced) or b (voiced) depending on the number. You do not need to memorize the phonological rule itself. You just need to hear and say ip-pon, san-bon, and rop-pon enough times that they become automatic.

The hiki counter for animals follows the same pattern:

  • 1: ip-piki (いっぴき)
  • 3: san-biki (さんびき)
  • 6: rop-piki (ろっぴき)
  • 8: hap-piki (はっぴき)
  • 10: jup-piki (じゅっぴき)

And kai for occurrences:

  • 1: ik-kai (いっかい)
  • 6: rok-kai (ろっかい)
  • 8: hak-kai (はっかい)
  • 10: juk-kai (じゅっかい)

Notice that kai shifts the k sound itself rather than h to p or b. Each counter has its own specific assimilation behavior, but the numbers that trigger changes are always the same set: 1, 6, 8, and 10. Once you internalize that pattern it becomes a useful diagnostic. If you are saying a number that is not 1, 6, 8, or 10, the counter probably attaches without a shift.

The practical approach is not to derive forms from rules in real-time. It is to drill the irregular combinations explicitly so you produce them from memory rather than construction. Ip-pon is a chunk, not a calculation.

How to study counters

The mistake most learners make with counters is trying to learn too many at once. A grammar textbook will list a dozen counters in a single chapter with tables for every number one through ten. You read the tables, nod, feel like you understand, and then discover during your next conversation that you have retained almost none of it. Tables are not practice. Recognition is not production.

A more effective approach:

  • Start with two counters, not eight. Nin and mai are the most versatile starting point. Spend a week drilling only those two across all numbers before adding more.
  • Drill full phrases, not isolated numbers. Instead of studying ip-pon in isolation, practice sentences: enpitsu ga ip-pon arimasu (えんぴつが いっぽんあります) - there is one pencil. The counter belongs to a phrase, and that is how you will use it.
  • Use spaced repetition on the irregular forms. Ip-pon, san-bon, rop-pon, and their equivalents in hiki and kai are the forms most likely to produce errors under pressure. Flag them explicitly in your flashcard system so they appear more often until they are solid.
  • Add one new counter per week. Eight counters over eight weeks is sustainable. Eight counters in one weekend is not. The second approach produces shallow familiarity with all of them and fluent recall of none of them.
  • Encounter them in real input. When you read or listen to Japanese, notice which counter a speaker or writer uses and make a mental note. Passive exposure to counters in context builds intuition that drilling alone cannot fully replicate.

When good enough is good enough

Japanese has hundreds of counters if you count all the specialized ones. There are counters for suits in a deck of cards, for Buddhist temples, for letters of the alphabet, for shots of espresso. Nobody expects a learner to know these. Most native speakers do not use them either.

At the conversational level you are aiming for, good enough means this: know your eight core counters, know the tsu fallback, and accept that you will occasionally use the wrong counter for something unusual. When that happens, you will still be understood. Japanese speakers are accustomed to hearing learners reach for tsu when the specific counter escapes them. Comprehension does not fail. Communication continues.

The goal is not to pass a linguistics exam on classifier systems. The goal is to order food, describe your household, talk about how many times you have been to Japan, and read a children-level text without stopping. The eight counters in this article get you there. Everything beyond that is expansion, not foundation.

Add new counters when you encounter them repeatedly in material you are actually reading or listening to. That is the signal that a counter is worth drilling. A counter you have seen twice in six months in a specialized manga is not a priority. A counter you encounter three times in a single conversation is.

Counters are one of those topics where the learning curve looks steep from a distance and feels manageable once you are inside it. Start narrow, drill deeply, and let the list grow at the pace your input demands. That approach works better than front-loading every counter at once, and it leaves you with something you can actually use.

What is the most common Japanese counter for beginners to learn first?+
